Yori returns to women’s basketball as Creighton assistant

Former Nebraska women’s basketball coach Connie Yori is joining the Creighton women’s basketball staff as an assistant, according to an announcement from Bluejays head coach Jim Flanery on Tuesday afternoon.

Yori will be a program adviser, helping develop game strategy, scout opponents and participate in on-campus recruiting.

“Creighton is my roots,” Yori said in a statement. “I spent 17 years here, and I’m so proud to be a Creighton alum and always have been. It was hard to leave here, and I am happy to be back helping my alma mater. This is a minor role in a really good program, and it’ll be fun to rejoin the Creighton family.”

Yori, a former Creighton player, coached the Jays from 1992-2002, and then the Huskers from 2002-2016.

Yori had nine trips to the NCAA tournament as the head coach in Lincoln, including two Sweet 16 berths. She was consensus national coach of the year in 2010, leading the Huskers to a 32-2 record that season. Yori had a 280-166 record at Nebraska.

Yori resigned at the end of the 2015-16 season amid accusations of player mistreatment. Several players and support staff members complained to Nebraska administration about Yori two seasons ago, alleging bullying and disregard for players’ well-being. Other players said they never experienced or witnessed any mistreatment.

When Yori stepped down, she said it was because of her desire to spend more time with her son and elderly parents. Yori, 54, had been out of coaching since leaving Nebraska.

Yori graduated from Creighton in 1986, scoring 2,010 career-points. That’s still the third most in school history.
