Women’s Basketball Stays Unbeaten in 73-39 Win over Southern

Nebraska Women’s Basketball has won ugly, has won close, and has won big in their unbeaten start to the season.

Wednesday night fell into that last category.

The Huskers(5-0) dominated the opening quarter, shooting 60-percent from the floor on the way to a 20-7 lead after the first. A tighter second quarter saw Nebraska only outscore Southern(2-3) by three, and hold a 35-19 halftime advantage. Part of that closer second quarter was the turnovers, which coach Amy Williams would get cleaned up.

“We felt like at times just had a couple uncharacteristic travels because we had people catching the ball not in their normal places,” said Williams. “Once we settled in, we took them out of a lot of that (transition) offense just because we really took care of the basketball.

Nebraska would only have one turnover in the second half, which began with a 20-5 third quarter where Southern shot just 14-percent. The Huskers would shoot 47.4-percent from the floor for the game, and out-rebounded the Jaguars 31-22.

Sophomore Leigha led all scorers with 16 points off the bench. Sophomore Ashtyn Veerbeek added 12 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Sam Haiby scored 10 points.

Senior Hannah Whitish scored eight points in the game, and while doing so she became the 33rd Husker to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in her career.

“Hannah has meant a lot to this program,” said Williams. “You wanna talk about a selfless player who’s really never been bogged down or really focused on individual awards and accolades, but to watch her surpass that thousandth point and to see the company that she has leaped into in our program’s past is a really special evening.”

Next up for the Huskers is a date with in-state rival Creighton(3-1).

“I”m tired of hearing ‘Blue State’ when it comes to women’s basketball,” said Whitish. “Ready to get that win Sunday.”

Nebraska and Creighton tip-off at 2 p.m. from Pinnacle Bank Arena Sunday.
