With Fall Camp in the Books, The Blackshirts are Approaching this Year’s Season Opener with a “Completely Different Attitude”

With fall camp finally in the books, the Nebraska football team have their season opener to prepare for. Husker fans won’t need to be reminded of the rocky start that NU got out to last season, but according to defensive coordinator Erik Chinander, the Blackshirts at the very least will be able to hit the ground running.

“It’s just a more mature group. It’s a more workmanlike group. It’s a group that knows what has to be done if we have to be successful,” Chinander said. “…To me, it’s a completely different attitude.”

The improved effort in practice is what Chinander attributes the turnaround to.

“What I’ve seen so far, is guys playing really really hard,” Chinander said. “The effort has been unbelievable. Communication has been unbelievable. Hopefully we cause some turnovers. Hopefully we’re well tackling. Hopefully we’re a physical football team. That’s what I want to see in game one.”

In other news and notes from practice:

  • Defensive line coach Tony Tuioti said he views his two deep essentially as starters. Darrion Daniels, Damion Daniels, Carlos Davis, Khalil Davis, Ben Stille and Deontre Thomas are all listed on the two deep in his group.
  • Tuioti also mentioned that as soon as Jahkeem Green is ready, he’ll be able to play. Tuioti said that because Green arrived late, Green needs some more time to acclimate, both mentally and physically.
  • Chinander said that he didn’t want to get “too exotic” in his game plan for NU’s season opener.
  • Chinander said that outside linebacker JoJo Domann hasn’t had enough snaps to solidify himself as a starter yet. Sophomore Caleb Tannor is the starter in front of Domann.
