Why Nebraska football’s move to the west sideline will give Huskers an edge this season


As Nebraska occupies a different Memorial Stadium sideline from a season ago, Matt Rhule sees advantages, big and small.

The home team is now on the west side, Rhule and the chain gang will no longer get in each other’s way during games. The sun doesn’t beat down quite as heavily on the Huskers’ new half of the field.

But the biggest factor might be the level of noise opponents will now have to contend with.

Being able to hear on the sideline is more important this season with in-helmet communication allowed for the first time in college football, and visiting teams will be directly under the wall of sound coming from the band and student section on the east side of the stadium.

“We’re a very kind group,” Rhule said. “It’s Nebraska nice, which is awesome. But for two hours, three hours, four hours, let’s make it hard on them. We go places sometimes, and it’s hard, right? It’s hard to communicate on the bench.”
