What was the logic behind the Mike Riley hire?

After seeing how far this program has fallen within the last 10 years I’m genuinely curious as to what Eichorst was thinking with the Mike Riley hire and how it has affected the program today.

Was it really as simple as he was the complete juxtaposition of Pelini? The logic being that he wouldn’t embarrass the program by constantly shouting at refs, getting personal foul penalties from the sideline, snarling at players, and generally making a complete ass of himself on national TV? It couldn’t have been that simple. Who else was on Eichorst’s short list? I just find it hard to believe a 60 year old coach from a low tier pac 10 school was the first choice to get us over the 9-4 hump. I mean there was a reason he was the most googled person in the state of Nebraska the day he was hired (I just made that up but wouldn’t be surprised if it were true).

Obviously, with the benefit of hindsight, it’s much easier to say he was not a good fit. I was just wondering if anyone had any further insight as to how and why we settled on him.
