What to expect as Nebraska football hosts recruiting visits

A roadblock to playing time, then a position change. That’s what it took for Bryson Webber to become a highly coveted football recruit.

A four-star cornerback out of Missouri City (Texas) Ridge Point, Webber’s junior season might have been spent warming up the bench as a wide receiver if not for the intervention of his coaches. Thanks to his 6-foot-3 frame and his existing ball skills, Webber was a natural fit for a move to cornerback that soon paid off.

After earning over a dozen offers, the defensive back recruit will travel to Lincoln this weekend for an official visit with the Huskers.

Before the offers came rolling in, Webber’s journey began with tough preseason conversation where his Ridge Point coaches, pointing to the many FBS recruits ahead of him at wide receiver, told Webber he’d need to move positions if he wanted to put a junior season on tape for college coaches.

The dynamic athlete obliged, then soon found his footing.

“My coaches here took the time to give me some extra work, it was a rocky start, but once I fully got into it and perfected my craft, I’ve come a long way from then to now,” Webber said.

The first program to evaluate Webber at cornerback, then offer a scholarship was Nebraska. Webber has also taken official visits to Baylor, TCU and Utah this month, but that long-standing connection between him and NU defensive backs coach Evan Cooper could play a major role in his final decision.

“They’ve always had that faith in me, so the fact that they were the first ones to trust in me that I can develop into who I am, that really goes a long way,” Webber said of Nebraska.

As he continues to learn the position, Webber hopes to emulate some of the NFL’s best cornerbacks down the road. The way Stephon Gilmore plays stands out to Webber  and it’s not because of his physical gifts.

“He’s so smart at identifying the keys the offensive teams shows, knowing where the ball’s going and knowing how he’s going to respond,” Webber said. “I love that side of the game.”

Webber’s visit comes during Nebraska’s final major recruiting weekend of the summer. The Huskers are set to welcome five current commits to campus for their official visits  Jamarion Parker, Caden VerMaas, Pierce Mooberry, Jackson Carpenter and Tanner Terch — while hosting other key 2025 targets.

One such target who had previously planned to visit this weekend, Port Arthur (Texas) Memorial edge rusher Michael Riles, instead committed to Oklahoma State on Thursday.

Here are the other official visitors expected in Lincoln this weekend:

* Millard South tight end Chase Loftin: A long-term recruiting target of Nebraska’s, the in-state tight end has been around the program at games and spring practices as an unofficial visitor. Loftin will now take his official visit following trips to Missouri, Florida State and Texas A&M.

* Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis offensive lineman Houston Kaahaaina-Torres: One of the nation’s top interior offensive line prospects, Kaahaaina-Torres has been on the radar of offensive line coach Donovan Raiola for years. Raiola offered the three-star lineman in June 2022 and Kaahaaina-Torres also visited Nebraska for the 2023 Spring Game. Kaahaaina-Torres has recently visited Michigan State and Utah.

* Hamilton (Ohio) athlete Noah King: A three-star prospect who has recently emerged as an important 2025 defensive back target, King picked up a Nebraska offer on June 6 from Cooper. King’s track and field speed is a valuable trait which impresses collegiate coaches, as is his 6-3 frame. King’s official visit to Nebraska will be his first of the summer.

* Gilbert (Iowa) linebacker Will Hawthorne: Having earned a scholarship offer after working at a Nebraska football camp this month, Hawthorne is one of NU’s top targets at inside linebacker. Speed and athleticism are part of the 6-3, 220-pound prospect’s game, with fellow Midwestern schools Iowa State and Kansas State standing as fellow front-runners.

* Murray (Kentucky) athlete Jeremiah Jones: Things had been quiet between Nebraska and Jones since the Huskers offered a scholarship in November  but the Huskers have picked up their interest in the 6-4 athlete. Jones has played in the secondary and at wide receiver and is ranked as the fourth-best prospect in the state of Kentucky by 247Sports. In-state school Louisville is a key contender.
