A look at some talking points after the Huskers’ game against UTEP on Saturday.

Behind enemy lines

From UTEP’s postgame news conference

UTEP coach Scotty Walden on time of possession: They had close to 80 plays compared to our 40 plays or whatever it was, and that’s maybe as bad as I’ve ever seen.”

Walden: “I’ve got to do a better job of managing our defense better, and I’ve got to have a better plan for our offense in terms of simplicity, to be able to execute at a higher level.”

Walden: “We’re going to be able to build off of this and go forward, but congrats to Nebraska and Coach Rhule on a great game. They played well, and they deserved to win today.”

What other media outlets are saying:

UTEP’s season-opener at Nebraska and its 86,072 fans always looked like a brutal way to start the Scotty Walden era.

For most of the first quarter, the Miners defied that while showing some promise, and the Cornhuskers needed some time to take UTEP’s measure.

They did in the second quarter, outscoring the Miners 23-0 en route to a 40-7 victory that left the Miners at the expected 0-1. UTEP’s defense seemed powerless to slow down the Huskers — even when Nebraska’s backup players enjoyed some time in the college football spotlight.

UTEP did play both quarterbacks Skyler Locklear, who got the start and played most of the game, and Cade McConnell, and even got a play for true freshman Shay Smith, but the Miners struggled to block Nebraska’s veteran defensive line, couldn’t establish the run and only moved the football in spurts. That led to a bunch of three-and-outs that kept the Miner defense on the field.
