We are in a better place now, because of Frost…

…but he may just not be the guy to get us where we should (yes, should) be.

There is not a doubt in my mind that this year’s Cornhuskers had the most potential of any team since Bo’s best years. Easily the best defense we’ve seen since 2009/2010. Since Frost took over, our team is mentally tougher (most of the time), physically stronger, and has better depth at nearly every position than we saw with Riley. It shows every week as we continue to go toe-to-toe with big-time opponents. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen this year, we continue to go toe-to-toe with average/below average opponents because we just cannot get the little things right consistently.

It’s agonizing looking back over our losses and seeing just a handful of plays that have essentially been the difference between 3-7 vs 7-3 or better. But as we’re all coming to see – moral victories are hollow without any actual victories.

So it comes down to the Head Coach. There is no way to look back at our coaching search earnestly and think that Frost wasn’t an absolute dynamite hire. Hindsight is a bitch, but if we’d missed on Frost back then, we’d have been furious with Moos. And I still hold that Frost has done a great job re-instilling some of the work ethic and culture that Riley allowed to completely erode. But again it’s the little things, the details that good/great teams excel at that are the difference between wins and losses. The record speaks for itself. Losing 80% of single-possession games speaks for itself – Frost has failed to get us over the hump.

I see it weekly both here and on /r/CFB: *”If Frost can’t do it, no one can”*.

Nonsense. Utter Nonsense.

I think it’s likely Frost is here next year, and I’ll be in the stands yelling and hoping he can get us where we should be. But he is not the end-all-be-all of NU. And if he is let go, this year or next, we will still be in a much stronger place than when he arrived. There is still enough money, institutional support, and definitely fan support to attract some good coaching talent. And there is enough talent on this roster that the right coach (think Mel Tucker at MSU, just as an example) could absolutely come in here and have immediate results.

Anyways there’s my Sunday morning musings.

TL;DR: Regardless of Frost’s future, he has laid a stronger foundation than what he inherited; and I’m happy for that.
