LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska football team practiced for a little over two hours on Saturday inside the Hawks Championship Center, working out in full pads. As part of Saturday’s activities, the Husker football program welcomed more 100 former players to watch today’s practice.

Offensive Coordinator Troy Walters met with media after practice to discuss the Husker offense.

“They’re doing a good job,” Walters said. “Any time you think tempo or spread offense, you think of soft, but we are going to be physical. It all starts upfront. Those guys understand that we can play fast, that’s to our advantage. If we can get lined up and the defensive line is not set, then we come off the ball and establish the line of scrimmage. So they’re doing a great job, we are throwing a lot at them. Defense is throwing a lot at us. The combination of both sometimes doesn’t look as good as it needs to be, but the guys are learning and they’re all in. We’re going to keep getting better.”

Walters addressed the pressure to create a ‘good offense’ by the season.

“It’s going to take some time. I’m not going to put a time frame on how long it is going to take. We have some great student athletes and they want to learn and they do everything they can to learn. But it going to take some time. At UCF it took about a year or two for the guys to really grasp what we wanted them to do and how we wanted it done. We could be faster here. I’m not going to put a time table on it.”

Walters also talked about the progress of the offense adapting to a new playbook.

“It’s a process and we have majority of our playbook in,” Walter said. “The guys have a grasp of what we are trying to do. They’re doing a good job of picking it all up, understanding what we are asking of them. There is lot we can do within our offense in terms of different formations, motions and the tempos. They have most of the offense in, we just have to detail everything.”

Walters mentioned the importance of players getting as many practice reps as possible throughout spring football.

“It’s all about reps and we practice fast,” Walters said. “That’s why a lot of the time we split up into two groups so that everyone is getting reps. We think that you learn by playing and by getting the extra reps. A lot of the details are going to come from getting extra reps and watching film. [We] are making sure we learn from our mistakes. If we do that and get better each practice, we will be where we want to be in the fall.”

The Huskers will return to spring practice on Tuesday. Nebraska’s annual Red-White Spring Game presented by First National Bank is set for Saturday, April 21 at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska fans wishing to be a part of a public lottery for approximately 1,000 recently returned tickets for the Spring Game should visit Huskers.com between 10 a.m. on Monday and 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
