Walters Reacts to Lindsey Transfer, and Warner Steps Up for Starting Role

With Tyjon Lindsey’s departure being made official last night, Nebraska is down to just eight wide receivers on scholarship. The news came as a particular surprise to offensive coordinator Troy Walters.

“It was a shocker. You know, he didn’t play as much as he’d like to,” Walters said. “We have a long season, and things happen, but he felt that it best that he pursue other opportunities.”

Lindsey was having a rough year. This season, Lindsey only had three catches for 22 yards. Lindsey’s lack of production and decision to transfer are especially disappointing, considering how highly touted of a prospect he was coming out of high school.

He was ranked 50th in the country nationally at his position, which was good enough to make him one of the best prospects Nebraska had ever recruited. Yet Lindsey could never settle in to Scott Frost’s offense, and was even replaced by J.D. Spielman as the punt returner.

There’s been plenty of shakeup elsewhere at the receiver position. Mike Williams has been benched in favor of Kade Warner, the son of former Super Bowl winning NFL quarterback, Kurt Warner.

“Andre Hunt was out with a knee injury, so I threw Kade in on the outside because we needed depth,” Walters said. Walters explained that Warner progressed positively as the week went on, and is like “another coach on the field… you just feel comfortable with him out there.”

Nebraska will be searching for their first win of the season against Wisconsin this upcoming Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 central standard time.
