Two safeties make surprise move on Nebraska depth chart

Two surprising names showed up on the Nebraska defensive depth chart Monday, including one player who didn’t even make the initial 120-man roster.

That would be redshirt freshman safety Rahmir Stewart, a much-ballyhooed recruit in the 2023 class who picked NU over offers from Penn State and West Virginia, among others. A star at Philadelphia’s Imhotep Institute, Stewart spent one season developing in the program but wasn’t at NU’s preferred weight for him when training camp opened.

So Rhule initially held Stewart out.

“It was his weight being where it’s supposed to be,” Rhule said. “To his credit, he handled that, and when he showed back up to camp, he was in good shape and his weight was down and he was playing the way he’s capable of playing. See, we believe Rahmir is a really good football player.”

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule speaks to the media on Tuesday at Hawks Championship Center.

At 205 pounds, that is. So long as Stewart stays there, Rhule said, he’s where Rhule wants him to be.

The other backup safety surprise was Lincoln Southeast junior walk-on Derek Branch, whose dad, Troy, played for the Huskers 1990-1993.

“Derek’s done a great job,” Rhule said, noting Branch made the 120-man roster last season, as he played one game against Northern Illinois. “He’s just a smart, heady, tough football player. He’s dependable. He does things right.”

Both Stewart and Branch are likely to appear on special teams, Rhule said.

The Big Ten is forever changed — for better or for worse is up for debate. The bigger question: Does Nebraska get its Hollywood ending in 2024?

A full-ride scholarship doesn’t have the same ring to it now that student-athletes can profit off their name, image and likeness. Nebraska is finding its footing in the new era.

Starting with a home game against UTEP and ending under the Black Friday lights, how will the Huskers fare in the limelight through their 2024 regular season?

If Nebraska names Dylan Raiola the starter prior to the season opener, it’d place the Huskers in rare company as a team starting a true freshman quarterback from day one.

There are no such thing as small roles, right? Here’s a closer look at how the Huskers will line up at each position, from the stars to the stuntmen.

Don’t let the “fall” fool you— it can get hot in Lincoln. Couple that with concealing signals and Nebraska’s switch to the west sideline makes perfect sense.

What’s it like to play with the Huskers in the video game that’s sweeping the nation? Nate Thomas shares what the game got right — and what it missed on.

The countdown to Nebraska’s season opener is on. Until then, a game of true or false, starting with how many wins Nebraska will have before heading to Columbus.

We’ve picked our preseason Top 25. Take a look at who’s ready to produce a box-office smash, and where some of the nation’s best could bust.
