Nebraska’s biggest enemy from last season has been an asset through a month of football.
Turnovers have helped the Huskers instead of hindered them after five games. A plus-five turnover margin ties for 18th nationally and second in the Big Ten. This after a minus-17 mark in 2023 was worse than 131 of 132 other FBS teams.
“I’d still love to see us get way more,” NU coach Matt Rhule said of takeaways. “Like, we have five sacks but no sack fumbles (against Purdue). That’s not good enough. That’s not good enough.”
The takeaways Nebraska has generated have proven impactful, including pick-six interceptions by Tommi Hill and John Bullock. Nebraska has yet to post a negative margin in any game after doing so in 10 of 12 chances last year.

Most impressive has been a lack of giveaways — the offense is among 32 teams with three or fewer. Dante Dowdell’s fumble in the opener against UTEP and quarterback Dylan Raiola’s pair of interceptions on 50-50 deep balls account for the full list.

Rhule said the discipline comes as opponents make a greater effort to eat clock and keep Nebraska’s explosive attack off the field. Raiola continues to check down passes and take care of the ball nonetheless.
The last time Nebraska finished with a positive turnover margin was 2016 when it ended plus five.
