Tony White talks Nebraska’s performance against UTEP

Defensive coordinator Tony White said the Nebraska coach still had the foresight to ensure the young players got defensive reps despite everything happening in the game.

On the radio Wednesday, White said he loved what he saw as several Huskers contributed to a 40-7 win against the Miners.

“Some of those young guys that got in the game,” White said. “It was just fun to watch all those guys play.”

Nebraska held UTEP to 205 total yards, forced two interceptions and recorded their first safety since 2018.

“Just a nice job by the guys,” White said. “Going out there and executing.”

White said his defense did a nice job containing the Miners’ skill players and tackling in open space. One player he pointed to was defensive lineman Ty Robinson, who recorded two tackles of loss.

“It’s really fun to watch those older guys,” White said. “When they can turn it loose and take it to another level.”

Another player he liked was defensive back Marques Buford. He recorded three tackles and one pass deflection. White said the corner worked hard in practices to reach this point and make an impact in the season opener.

“It was really cool to see him go out there,” White said. “Use his training and break up the ball like it was nothing.”

With the amount of players getting time on the field defensively, White said there were moments when guys on the field hadn’t taken defensive reps in practice.

White credited their preparation to the time they spent with the scout defense and Rhule’s ensuring they had film and schemes to study before entering the game.

Another player White was proud of was defensive lineman Mason Goldman. He worked hard to return from injury stronger and ready to play, and he recorded a sack against UTEP.

“Proud of him,” White said. “It just gives confidence to those guys that the process is working.”

As the Huskers prepare to take on Colorado, White emphasized the special ability of quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

“He truly is one of the best quarterbacks in the country,” White said. “But mentally wise, that’s where he really gains a lot of respect from me. He knows football.”

He also praised two-way player Travis Hunter. Sanders and Hunter will pose a great challenge, but he wants his defense to double down on their process because it works.

“This is what you coach for,” White said. “This is what you come to Nebraska for, to be part of rivalries like this.”
