Tony White talks adding John Butler and Nebraska’s secondary

Nebraska’s Tony White coaches during a team practice on Tuesday at Hawks Championship Center.

Continuity on Nebraska’s defensive staff took a hit after Evan Cooper’s resignation earlier this month, but experience won’t be a problem.

Veteran coach John Butler replaced Cooper as secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator. Butler had stints with Penn State, Minnesota, South Carolina, the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans after beginning his coaching career almost 30 years ago in the Division III ranks.

He brings a vast football knowledge to Nebraska, where an experienced group of defensive backs await.

“He’s an older guy but he’s got a lot of energy to him,” defensive coordinator Tony White said Thursday on the Huskers Radio Network. “He’s got a lot of knowledge. Every time you sit down in the room you kind of sit up in your chair and you get your pen ready because there’s little nuggets of just experience that he has.”

Training camp is on the horizon, and the Huskers have 32 defensive backs. And the secondary group is mostly intact from a year ago.

Isaac Gifford, one of the Huskers’ most productive players in 2023, announced his return in December. Tommi Hill emerged as a playmaker in 2023 and is a full-time defensive back after flipping between defense and receiver early in his career.

Malcolm Hartzog also returned. He has played cornerback and safety in his two years at NU.

Quinton Newsome is gone, heading to training camp with the Denver Broncos, but Nebraska has reinforcements in Marques Buford and DeShon Singleton. Buford missed the first eight games of last season with a knee injury but played the final four, avoiding burning a season of eligibility.

“Really feel like now that he’s kind of broke through and gotten confidence back on the legs and feeling his strongest since he’s been here and all that kind of stuff, really feel like it’s gonna be a great year for ’Ques,” White said. “He’s a guy who can go out, play outside, play inside, blitz, had a great sack against Maryland coming off the edge over there.

“So again, another piece in the puzzle that (I) expect big things from.”

Singleton rose from special teamer and part-time defender in 2022 to a Blackshirt who donned a single-digit number in 2023. He started the first five games, recording seven tackles and a pass breakup before going down with a knee injury against Michigan. He’ll be a full participant when fall camp begins.

“The crazy thing is you play so much of the season without him, and then you go back and watch the cutups, and when you see him in the game, you feel his presence,” White said. “You feel his range. You feel his physicality when he fills in on the run. You see a calm presence out there, a playmaker.”
