This week I celebrated another anniversary. It was 7 years ago I was lucky to have not died from a heart attack caused by blood clots. The pain in my leg started September 16th, a fateful Saturday that saw Nebraska lose at home to Northern Illinois (hello Notre Dame). The Broncos lost at the Buffalo Bills the next day, and by Monday I was in the hospital because I could no longer walk and had some chest pain. Long story short, I had a blood clot in each vain in my right calf (DVT blood clot) and a pulmonary embolism because there was also a blood clot stuck in my right lung. The doctor told me it had to go through my heart to get stuck in that lung, and if the chunk of clot had been slightly larger, none of you would have ever gotten to know me.
As I was sitting in my hospital bed, a doctor told me I might need surgery to remove the clots from my leg. I asked what that entailed, and he said they would stick a catheter in my leg, suck out the clot and sew me back up. After he left, I started chuckling to myself. My poor wife, who could no longer fight back tears, asked me what was so funny. I responded “I can think of a far worse place they could stick that catheter.” My wife laughed, slightly disappointed and unsurprised that was the first thing I thought of. 7 years later, I’ve had zero problems, so now I tell it as a lovely anecdote. But, like an arthritic knee about to tell you it’s going to rain, my leg bothers me something awful when the weather gets colder.
So here comes the pain….and more importantly….today’s flakes!
