Thursday Flakes: History, No Let Down’s and Fantasy News

I wasn’t really sure if I had anything to talk about this week. Outside of being neck deep in Husker shirts at work, not a whole lot of excitement in my world. So, I’ll spend my opening dialogue like this: September 11th, 2001, I was an 8th grader at Kearney Catholic High School. I was in Mrs. Volkmer’s Theology class when we started to receive word what was going on in New York City. For those of us old enough to remember what happened, we can close our eyes and picture where we were as the news unfolded throughout the day. My parents were in Lake Tahoe on a business trip and my grandmother had come from Lincoln to babysit me for a few days.

Sports started the healing process a few days later, but it felt awkward. Outside of the Oklahoma City bombing, this was probably the most we fully appreciated those who have sacrificed their lives in one way or another. In honor of September 11th, I would like to give a shout out to my Grandfather Leroy Shearer, who was wounded in Korea. My Grandfather Rolland Riese, who served in the Air Force for 20 years. To my cousin Christopher Riese, who served in the Marines. Thank you all for putting your lives on the line so I can sit behind a keyboard and complain about sports.
