Three Huskers To Wrestle For All-America Honors

Chad Red Jr., Mikey Labriola and Taylor Venz will wrestle for All-America honors in this evening’s Round of 12 following Thursday’s opening sessions of the 2021 NCAA Championships.

Leading the Huskers with three wins in the tournament, #8 Red Jr. (141) won both of his consolation matches of the morning to earn himself a spot in Friday evening’s Round of 12. He picked up a 12-8 decision over Iowa State’s #7 Ian Parker in the second consolation round before earning bonus points in an 11-3 major decision over Purdue’s #18 Parker Filius.

#4 Labriola (174) and #8 Venz (184) represented Nebraska in the championship quarterfinals but fell in their matches to move to the consolation bracket. Labriola dropped his bout to Cal Poly’s #12 Bernie Truax by 4-2 decision. Venz met Penn State’s top-seeded Aaron Brooks in his quarterfinal match, falling by 9-4 decision.

While three Huskers remain alive in the tournament, five ended their NCAA Championship run on Thursday. Peyton Robb (165) and Eric Schultz (197) both won their first matches of the day but were eliminated from the tournament in the third round of the consolation bracket. Robb started off the day with a win over Wyoming’s #20 Cole Moody by major decision, 15-7. In the third consolation round, the sophomore met Michigan’s #11 Cameron Amine and fell by 6-4 decision. Robb finishes the 2020-21 season 11-7 overall. Schultz also won his first match of the day by major decision, taking down Lehigh’s #16 Jake Jakobsen 10-2. The senior was then defeated by Missouri’s #7 Rocky Elam in the third consolation round. He finishes the year 12-3 overall.

Liam Cronin (125), Ridge Lovett (149) and Christian Lance (285) fell in their respective second consolation round matches. Cronin (125) dropped a tight bout to Lehigh’s Jaret Lane, 14-13. He finishes the season 10-5 overall in his first year as a Husker. Lovett was pinned by Duke’s #27 Josh Finesilver in his second consolation match to close his sophomore season 9-3 overall.
