Thoughts on Jeff Sims after watching some GT games

I decided to do my due diligence and watch some Jeff Sims games to see what to expect if he is indeed the starter for us next fall. I’ll give you all my honest opinion on him.

The good:

-effortlessly fast (like TMart was)

-read options are as explosive as 2010-2013 huskers

-absolute cannon for arm

-ability to see a play breakdown and scramble to make something out of nothing.

-throws a beautiful ball

-not afraid to take a hit for extra yardage.

The bad:

-not afraid to take a hit for extra yardage.

-very inconsistent through the air

-tends to force balls and overthrow

When you compare stats between Jeff Sims and Casey Thompson, the passing numbers jump out. Compare Casey Thompsons career average of 63.5% to Sims 57.5. GT passes a lot less than Nebraska has. Taking a deeper dive and comparing his best stats to the best stats of Taylor and Adrian, it doesn’t get any better.

My take away: pump the brakes. Stat wise and play wise, Jeff Sims is most similar to Taylor Martinez. Pass completion percentage is actually worse that Taylor Martinez was. You will be happy know he hasn’t thrown as many INTs however. If Casey heals from surgery and is ready to go in time, you want him to start. Never know what a new team can do for sims, but atleast on paper, he’s Taylor Martinez with a stronger, but less accurate arm.
