Things to do in Madison as a Husker Alum Living in Badger Territory.

I lived in Madison now for 8 years, so wanted to share some of my favorites before this weekend when we finally break our curse. This is by no means an an exhaustive list.

Camp Randall Stadium is a dry stadium so get your pregame done before getting to the stadium, lines tend not to be that long as most students don’t show up until the end of the 1st and start leaving after jump around occurs between the 3rd and the 4th.

When visiting Madison, most things people do on their first visit is around the square (the state Capitol) or down State Street (more traditional college scene)

The first to mention is the Memorial Union Terrace (not Union South, they are different), probably the most jealous of Badger alums is getting to sit out on Lake Mendota enjoying a few pitchers of Spotted Cows and no you don’t need to be an alumni to go.

The Wisconsin State Capitol also is a great visit and unlike most states (looking at you Colorado) is actually open to the public everyday, I would recommend walking in and going to the roof (it is free).

Breweries

* Young Blood – My favorite brewery opened in the middle of Covid and hasn’t looked back, great variety of IPAs and Sours
* Giant Jones – A unique brewery that focuses on giant beers with some non-traditional styles
* Working Draft – Located nearby Giant Jones, solid IPAs, good Friday night spot
* Karben4 – Little far from downtown, but overall solid projects, with even better labels

Places to Pregame

* Lucky’s 1313 Brew Pub – Where I will be before the game, about a 6 min walk to Camp Randall
* Jordan’s – Across the street from Lucky’s
* SconnieBar – Smaller place that used to host Lucky’s until a few years ago

Breakfast Spots

* Greenbush Bakery – Iconic donut shop near campus
* Lane’s Bakery – My personal favorite bakery (not walkable from downtown), make in my opinion the best kringles in the state
* Mickie’s Dairy Bar – Greasy spoon that is featured on most best of lists
* Curve – Another greasy spoon

Restaurants

* Tipsy Cow – Brewpub with a wide variety of options, a go to when friends and family visit
* Lucielle’s – Upper end pizza next to Tipsy Cow and Young Blood
* The Coopers Tavern- Nicer restaurant with a view on the square
* Tornado Steak House – Great steak spot, with discounts usually starting at 10PM

Bars

* Wandos – The Birthplace of Jump Around (Mentioned on College Day in 2022)
* Red Rocks – Probably the most popular college area spot these days (I think I’m old now)
* City Bar, State Street Brats, Whiskey Jack’s Saloon are all other popular options
* Ivory Room – Dueling Piano Bar (has a cover)

and finally Go Big Red!
