The BYU Hail Mary Cursed Us

I’ve seen a little discussion on Twitter about Nebraska’s bad luck in one-possession games so I went all the way back to 2008 and the start of the Pelini era. Here’s how things breakdown with record in one possession games in parenthesis:

A few highlights:

– Starting in 2011 when it joined the B1G, Nebraska went 13-4 in one-possession games until Bo got fired at end of 2014

– Had a 10 game winning streak in one-possession games between 2012 and 2014!

– Combined, Riley and Frost are 10-24 in one possession games. Bo was 18-12. 10-24 since the BYU Hail Mary and there have been some painful ones. I feel like Frost gives up more leads where as Riley was always chasing a comeback, but that’s purely anecdotal.

– We’ll swing back to the median soon enough. Chris Fallica of College Gameday tweeted: Nine teams have played at least four games vs FBS opponents decided by seven points or fewer and have lost on average 2 of those games each (18-19, .486). It would seem you want to be .500 or better. The last time we were .500 or better was 2016 and finished 9-4. Last year was close going 2-3, but going 3-4 would’ve had the overall record at 4-4.

2008: 9-4 (2-2)

2009: 10-4 (2-3)

2010: 10-4 (1-3)(!!!)

2011: 9-4 (2-1)

2012: 10-4 (4-1)

2013: 9-4 (5-0)

2014: 9-4 (2-2)

2015: 6-7 (2-6)

2016: 9-4 (2-1)

2017: 4-8 (2-3)

2018: 4-8 (1-5)

2019: 5-7 (1-4)

2020: 3-5 (2-3)

2021: 3-4 (0-4)
