Texan defensive lineman Carlon Jones commits to Nebraska

Nebraska’s Sportify recruiting playlist for June now includes a defensive lineman.

Bay City (Texas) defender Carlon Jones committed to the Huskers following a month of official visits that began in Lincoln. His other stops since then — Oklahoma State, TCU, California and Georgia Tech — were among a final group that also included Houston.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder jumped onto NU’s radar in the spring and he drew visits from position coaches Evan Cooper and Terrance Knighton as the three-star recruit quickly became a priority target.

“The relationship grew with me and Nebraska because of Coach Knighton,” Jones said in June. He did not immediately return calls on Thursday. “He’s a cool dude and great coach. I’m always looking for a good relationship with no fake love. I just want to have a coach who’s always by my side, someone who I always have to fall back on.”

Jones fielded more than 20 offers, many coming on the strength of a standout junior campaign in which he made 102 tackles (29 for loss) in 12 games against Texas Class 4A competition. He becomes the 22nd commit of the 2024 class — and 15th this month — joining Elkhorn South’s Ashton Murphy as future Husker D-linemen. The Huskers signed five in the 2023 class and may add another to the 2024 class as it rebuilds a unit that peaked in 2021, then allowed 189 rushing yards per game in 2022 with a transfer-heavy flavor.

In NU’s 3-3-5 defense, a player of Jones’ size — similar to that of former Husker Deontre Thomas — could move all over the line of scrimmage, though Nebraska will tend to use taller, heavier nose tackles against run-oriented offenses like Minnesota.

Jones is also the seventh NU prospect to emerge from the Lone Star State in this cycle. The others are running back Kewan Lacy (Lancaster), athlete Braylen Prude (Pearland), defensive back Mario Buford (DeSoto), tight end Ian Flynt (Katy), offensive lineman Gibson Pyle (Klein) and athlete Roger Gradney (Altair). With a number of coach and personnel department hires from the Lone Star State, Nebraska has emphasized recruiting in Texas, signing six in the 2023 class.
