Spring Break Hasn’t Slowed Down the Huskers

According to offensive coordinator Troy Walters, the Huskers haven’t lost a step after getting a week off for Spring Break. However, that wasn’t the case last season, Walters told reporters following Monday morning’s practice at the Hawks Championship Center.

“Last year, we took two or three days to get going again. This year, it’s totally different,” Walters said.  “The guys are mature. The guys understand the standard. When we step on the field, there’s a standard, and that’s to be a champion.”

Starting quarterback Adrian Martinez agreed, saying that the team was dialed in for their first practice back.

“I felt good about it,” Martinez said. “There was a high level of energy and I think that’s what mattered most coming back from spring break.”

With nine practices left, the position battles are continuing to rage on, especially at wide receiver. Outside of J.D. Spielman, another receiver has still yet to claim the No. 2 spot, but Walters says there are plenty of players that have shown some positive flashes.

Walters specifically mentioned that Andre Hunt, Jaron Woodyard, Wan’Dale Robinson, and former practice squad member Wyatt Liewer have all made great strides.

Woodyard arrived on campus late last summer from Arizona Western Community College. As a senior, he recognizes that his time is running out to solidify a position as a starter, but told reporters he believes he’s been making significant progress.

“I’m a lot further along than I was last year… I feel confident in the position where I’m at right now,” Woodyard said.

Part of the success of not only Woodyard but the whole position group will depend on Martinez, who has been pushing his receivers in practice to reach the next level.

“They’ve been stepping up,” Martinez said. “I’m really excited about that group. I’m trying to challenge them. I know they’re accepting that challenge (and they’re) excited to compete. Those guys are busting their tail out there.”

Nebraska will have 8 more spring practices until the spring game on April 13th, which can be heard on KLIN.
