so after a long day of despair and drinking I decided to be hopefully and assemble a list of realistic targets for frosts job, since due to the investigation and ass beatings we’re likely to suffer throughout the year. note, this isn’t ranked individually and is ranked by realism, not their fit with the program.
Tier 1: Pie in Sky, not happening
ISU HC Matt Campbell: let’s not delude ourselves, Campbell ain’t coming. as long as iowa state fully backs him and the big 12 has access to a NY6 bowl hes staying.
Cinci HC Like Fickell: he’s waiting for one of tOSU or Notre Dame. maybe if we weren’t an absolute dumpster fire we could convince him
Clemson DC Brent Venables: seemingly doesn’t want to be a hc. turned down his alma mater (KSU) and his ex roommate (hocutt with tech), along with some high profile sec jobs like auburn
Tier 2: unlikely, will be a battle
Utah HC Kyle Wittingham: has been linked with a move away from Utah for a minute, but with new renovations he’ll likely stay
Clemson OC Tony Elliot: has turned down Vandy and Tennessee, but is considered one of the top assistants getting a hc job for a while
Kansas HC Lance Liepold: although he just moved to Kansas, he turned Buffalo into a top tier g5 team with a strong emphasis on the power run. wouldn’t be surprised if we reach out and flash enough money to tempt him to leave
Tier 3: realistic targets
Coastal Carolina HC Jamey Chadwell: coastal was one of the most surprising teams last year, and chadwell’s mullet wearing, fun atmosphere has endeared him to many fans. though his lackluster record (19-17 total) may cause Nebraska to look else where. if he has another similar season he may be towards the top of the list
Louisiana HC Billy Napier: an ex Saban and Dabo assistant Napier has turned Louisanna into the second best G5 program behind Cinci. He even convincingly beat Campbell last year. He’s interviewed for Auburn, Baylor, and SCAR, if he can keep it up, then he’ll have a lot of offers. (personally he’s my dream pick)
Bama OC Bill O Brian: the newest member of the nick saban coaching rehab school, BoB is by no means a bad coach and has had success in the big 10 in the past, despite massive sanctions
Oklahoma DC Alex Grinch: drawing interest from Illinois and Arizona Grinch has turned stoops laughable defense into a formidable force. Albert will get a first hand look at him in a few weeks, maybe he’ll impress
Notre Dame DC Marcus Freeman: one of the best recruiters in the country, he’s played a large part in getting ND as the number 1 recruiting class for 22. He also apparently “blew away” Illinois during his interview for their HC opening.
Tier 4: the backups/don’t match well
UCF HC Gus Malahan: after years of mediocrity at auburn Gus finally got fired. if he can bring UCF back into top 10 discussion maybe he’ll give him a shout. but another HC from UCF who struggles to develop QBs might not be the right fit for us
Army HC Jeff Monken: let’s be real here, he’s not coming to Nebraska. we will never run the triple option, as it is not a viable long term option at the P5 level, especially since we are supposed to have big aspirations.
Charlotte HC Will Healy: the second youngest FBS HC draws a lot of attention with his club lit lifestyle and had gotten some interest in the vandy and Missouri (he apparently lost it due to his insistence on bringing his staff from Charlotte) jobs. but he has a below .500 record at the fcs and g5 level and the stats don’t really paint his turn around at Charlotte as very impressive. also I feel like club lit won’t exactly be the greatest cultural fit with the blue hairs.
USC OC Graham Harrell: y’all might remember him from when he toarched us back in 08, but he is now a super promising young coach, who has been linked to a few G5 openings, but decided to become an OC at USC. if USC does well he could be considered for a few P5 jobs, but he may not fit well due to his air raid philosophy which doesn’t match well with Nebraska
Liberty HC Hugh Freeze: his checkered past may not play well considering we’re under investigation. but he would undeniably bring in the Ws, it’s the off the field/personality stuff that stands in the way
Bengals HC zac taylor: an ex husker with the Sean McVay stamp of approval. his time in Cincinnati looks like it’s coming to an end. might give him a shout solely bc of the ex husker tag (so ig he could possibly get moved up into the realistic targets)
Wyoming HC Craig Bohl: another ex husker, so it’s a lazy connection, but he has gotten some decent results with a historically bad program
