Searching for O-line answers, Scott Frost says Huskers will have ‘open competition’ this week. Who are some candidates? | Football

“I essentially got benched for part of a game my senior year and thing worked out pretty well,” he said. “I benched (junior quarterback Adrian Martinez) last year when he wasn’t playing well enough and he’s playing at an elite level right now with some of the things he’s doing. That happens, that’s life, and if those guys bounce back, a couple of them, they’re going to be fine.

“But you have two choices when something like that happens, and I hope they pick the right choice and I think overall it’s going to make us better as a unit.”

Sichterman said the group had some changes to its typical drill work on Monday at practice and credited offensive line coach Greg Austin with switching things up as the group continues to struggle. Frost also has spent more time with the offensive line on the sidelines in between drives during games and said he had a more active role in helping with the group on Saturday.

“He’s the head coach and he’s got to address the issues and who’s not performing on the team,” Sichterman said. “That’s been the offensive line, offensively. Coach Frost is continuing to take a bigger role in coaching us as an O-line along with Coach Austin.”

Despite the potential week of change for the Huskers, Frost said Monday that he remains confident in the core group of players in Austin’s room and what the future holds for them. It’s just, simply, that they need the production now. After all, PFF credited MSU with 28 pressures in 47 pass plays on Saturday night.
