Schreiber earns B1G Player of the Week, Huskers travel to Kansas State

Nebraska senior outfielder Scott Schreiber earned Big Ten Player-of-the-Week honors on Monday for his efforts at Michigan State over the weekend.

Schreiber went 6-for-8 during the two-game series with two home runs, one double, two RBIs and four runs scored. Schreiber has homered in five consecutive games and has a nine-game hitting streak.

A native of Menasha, Wisconsin, Schreiber leads the team in about every offensive category, including batting average (.413), hits (50), runs scored (34), RBIs (30), and home runs (11).

His .413 average is second highest in the Big Ten and ninth highest in the nation. His .769 slugging percentage is the sixth highest in the country.

Despite Schreiber’s efforts, the Huskers lost both games to the Spartans, falling 17-5 on Saturday and 5-3 on Sunday.

Nebraska (14-16, 2-6 Big Ten) goes back on the road Tuesday night for the seventh consecutive game. They’ll take on Kansas State (15-17, 2-7 Big 12) in Manhattan, KS. First pitch from Tointon Family Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.

The Huskers have lost four straight, six of their last seven, and sit in 11th place in the conference standings.

Head coach Darin Erstad remains confident his team will find ways to compete.

“They’re going to keep competing,” Erstad said after Nebraska’s 5-3 loss to MSU on Sunday afternoon. “They’re not going to back down. I mean, that’s not the issue. The effort’s there. When a team’s struggling, they find ways to lose, and we’re rewriting the book on finding ways to lose.”

Erstad was on Sports Nightly Monday night for his weekly radio show, and said Tom Osborne has talked with him about the season, which is off to its slowest 30-game start since 2013.

“He only calls when things are bad so it must be pretty bad when he’s calling me,” Erstad said. “I got to yell at him a little bit. He always brings up the stuff like it’s never as bad as when he probably lost to Oklahoma or lost Orange Bowls. It makes you feel better when you talk to him.”
