Detroit – In the first of two sessions on the final day of the 2022 NCAA Championships, Peyton Robb led the Huskers with a fourth-place finish in the 157-pound bracket. Mikey Labriola and Eric Schultz followed with seventh-place finishes and Christian Lance got eighth.
After five-straight wins in the consolation bracket, Robb met Iowa State’s top-seeded David Carr in Saturday’s third-place match. Carr attacked first in Period 1 and Robb responded with escapes in the final two periods, but it was not enough as Carr recorded two takedowns and two near fall points to secure the 7-2 victory.
In his consolation semifinal match earlier in the session, the Owatonna, Minn., native took a 6-4 decision over Arizona State’s three-seed Jacori Teemer to secure his spot in the battle for bronze. Robb landed a takedown in each of the opening two periods and secured the RT point to grab the win.
For the second time this season, Labriola met North Carolina’s #10 Clay Lautt as the two battled for a seventh-place finish. The first period was scoreless and Lautt started Period 2 on bottom, got the escape point and held the 1-0 lead to start the final two minutes. In Period 3, Labriola tied the match with an escape of his own and took the lead with a takedown to grab the seventh-place finish. Labriola finishes the tournament with a 4-2 record and an all-time championship record of 14-6.
At 197, Schultz faced #14 Greg Bulsak of Rutgers as they grappled for a seventh-place finish. The wrestlers were tied after Period 1 before Schultz scored first with a takedown in the second period. Bulsak responded with an escape in the final two periods, but Schultz held on to secure the riding time point and the seventh-place finish. Schultz wraps up his Husker career as a two-time All-American with 103 career victories.
Finishing competition in Session V was Lance at heavyweight against #3 Tony Cassioppi of Iowa. In the second matchup between the two this season, the two were tied 0-0 to start Period 3. In the final two minutes, Cassioppi scored an escape and tallied the riding time point to take the 2-0 decision. Lance concludes his Husker career with an eighth-place finish and the NCAA All-American status.
Coming up in tonight’s session, Ridge Lovett will face top-seeded and undefeated Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell for a chance at the Huskers’ first individual National Championship since Jordan Burroughs in 2011.
