Rams Rally Past Huskers – University of Nebraska

The Nebraska softball team struck first in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, but Colorado State scored the game’s final five runs to claim a 5-1 victory at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers led 1-0 after four innings, but the Rams scored three times in the fifth and once in the sixth and seventh to rally for the win and complete a doubleheader sweep.

Colorado State out-hit Nebraska 8-6 and both teams benefited from errors, as the Huskers’ only run was unearned and three of the Rams’ runs were unearned.

Julia Cabral earned the win with 3.2 scoreless innings of three-hit relief. CSU starter Jetta Nannen went 3.1 innings and allowed only one unearned run on just three hits.

Kaylin Kinney pitched a complete game in a losing effort for Nebraska. She allowed eight hits and struck out eight, while only two of the five runs she surrendered were earned.

Offensively, Billie Andrews and Courtney Wallace were each 2-for-3, combing for four of Nebraska’s six hits.

Nebraska took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a pair of Colorado State errors. Mya Felder led off with a single and after a line out, Brooke Andrews reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Kinney then hit into a fielder’s choice, but a throwing error on the play allowed pinch runner Dakota Carter to score the game’s first run.

 

Colorado State took advantage of a Husker error to grab a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. A strikeout, an error and another strikeout gave the Rams a runner at first with two outs. Back-to-back walks then loaded the bases before an infield single and a throwing error plated two runs for Colorado State. A wild pitch allowed the third and final run of the inning to score.

 

Nebraska had a chance to cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a one-out single and two-out walk, but the Huskers stranded the tying runners in scoring position.

 

The Rams stretched their lead to 4-1 with another run in the top of the sixth. The inning began with a leadoff double and a one-out RBI infield single marked the first of Colorado State’s 14 runs in the doubleheader that was earned.

 

Colorado State scored for a third straight inning, adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh. A pair of one-out singles and a sacrifice fly gave Colorado State a 5-1 lead.

Nebraska had a one-out single from Billie Andrews in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to bring her home.

 

Nebraska returns to action tomorrow, hosting Colorado State at 10 a.m. and Omaha at approximately 3 p.m.
