Puerto Rico Hurricane Devastation Prompts Worry of IV Solution Shortage; Bryan Health Says It’s Prepared

Seven Weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, the island’s various industries, to say nothing of their residents, are still trying to return to normalcy.

Little known fact, a significant amount of IV solution commonly found in U.S hospitals is manufactured in Puerto Rico, including hospitals in Nebraska. This is prompting concern in hospitals nation wide as to whether there will soon be a shortage. Spokesman for Bryan Health Brad Colee says, as far as Bryan health is concerned, it’s business as usual.

He says while Puerto Rico Saline manufacturer Baxter has seen disruption in their supply,  to ensure an appropriate amount of saline gets to their patients, they’ve done business with companies iCU Medical and B. Braun Medical.

Colee adds IV solution shortages are not uncommon, and past shortages have prepared the hospital for these types situations.
