The Nebraska soccer team poked and prodded, but it could not find the back of the net in a 1-0 road loss to Portland on Sunday.
The Pilots scored the match’s lone goal on a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Cally Togiai scored into the bottom right corner of the net.
The Huskers lost despite holding a significant advantage in shots, 14-6. Sarah Weber had three shots (two on goal) during a burst early in the second half, but Portland goalkeeper Bre Norris turned each attempt away.
Nebraska (3-3) nearly had the equalizer in the final stages of the match. Weber took a shot off a cross from Jordan Zade and Ella Guyott recorded a shot on goal, but Norris again stood tall to seal a win for the Pilots (4-2-1).
The Huskers have struggled in nonconference play, a year after going 6-1-1 vs. non-Big Ten opponents. Nebraska, the reigning Big Ten regular season champions, starts its league schedule on Thursday on the road vs. Iowa.
