Pools and $30,000 treadmills: Inside Nebraska’s facility

Nebraska football athletic trainer Chris Peduzzi discusses the benefits of hydrotherapy pools, which is outfitted with a treadmill, on Thursday at Osborne Legacy Complex.

No detail has been left to chance inside Osborne Legacy Complex.

The standout features include state-of-the-art equipment, massive windows that overlook the outdoor practice field and multiple examination rooms.

Head football trainer Chris Peduzzi, who joined Nebraska after working for the Philadelphia Eagles and Ball State, thought he was too late to pick out equipment, but that wasn’t a problem.

“I got here right (after) the ask was made over what we’d like to have in the room, and we were told no on nothing,” Peduzzi said. “We went from asking for one Boost treadmill to getting two.”

Despite the hefty price tag of such an upgrade — the microgravity treadmills cost over $30,000 — such efforts are hardly insignificant when it comes to getting players back on the field sooner. Alongside several recovery pools, including one that includes a built-in treadmill on the floor of the pool, NU’s training room contains several different stations that assist in physical therapy work.

When it comes to evaluating when players are fully recovered and ready to return to the field, every injury or setback is unique. Peduzzi and his staff work closely with Nebraska’s director of sports science, Mitch Cholewinski, to evaluate data showing how players are progressing in their recovery.

With weekly meetings on Wednesdays and Fridays and text messages in the hours in between, NU’s athletic trainers, sports science staff and football coaching staff can all be on the same page about an individual player’s health.

“We discuss every player twice a week,” Peduzzi said. “We go through the whole process over what we can do to help with their injury and recovery and where they are in their process of rehab. Sometimes with big staffs, it’s hard to communicate with everybody, but I think we do a pretty good job through the text messages as well as meeting in person.”
