Ossi Shatters School Record, Leads Huskers to Victory Over UTEP

In an impressive display of marksmanship, senior captain Cecelia Ossi led the No. 8 Nebraska rifle team to victory over No. 19 UTEP with a record-breaking performance on Saturday. Ossi’s exceptional shooting in the smallbore event earned her a school record, with a remarkable score of 597, surpassing a nearly 20-year-old record set by Kristina Fehlings, who scored 593.

This outstanding achievement anchored the Huskers’ dominant 4,720-4,547 win over their opponents, showcasing the team’s depth and talent. Nebraska’s six shooters claimed the top six overall spots in the competition, a testament to the team’s collective skill and coordination.

Ossi not only set a new school record but also achieved a personal best with an impressive aggregate score of 1,191, securing the first-place finish. Following closely behind, sophomore Emma Rhode took second place with a score of 1,181, while freshman Charlotte Mick placed third with a score of 1,180. Their performances were pivotal in Nebraska’s victory.

Junior Mackenzie Strauch, sophomore Camilla Johannessen, and senior Madelynn Erickson also delivered solid performances, completing the top six finishes for the Huskers.

Head Coach Mindy Miles expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance, particularly praising Ossi’s remarkable achievement in smallbore. She also noted the team’s strong showing in air rifle, which sets a positive tone as they build confidence heading into the conference championships.

In the air rifle event, the Huskers continued their dominance by securing the top five positions. Rhode and Mick both recorded impressive scores of 597, with Rhode clinching the first place on a tiebreaker based on the number of 10-point shots. Ossi followed in third place with a score of 594, while Strauch and Johannessen rounded out the top five.

The smallbore event was equally successful for Nebraska, with Ossi’s record-breaking performance leading the charge. Rhode and Mick followed in second and third places, respectively, contributing to the Huskers’ clean sweep of the top spots.

The Nebraska rifle team is set to compete against UTEP again tomorrow at 10 a.m. (central), providing another opportunity to showcase their prowess and prepare for upcoming challenges. Fans can stay updated with live results and support the Huskers as they continue to aim for excellence.
