On “Frost Needs Time”

Been thinking about this statement lately and wanted to add some nuance and open a discussion about this idea. I’ll get right into some bullet points and keep it brief to hopefully have more conversation in the comments, as I’m genuinely interested in others’ thoughts and not just spewing my own. So here are different ways I break down the “Frost needs time” idea.

1. Frost needs time to get his guys. Most say three or four years is enough for this, and sometimes I agree, but I think when coaches change leagues and levels (not just Frost but everywhere) it should be five or six. You should still see progress in years one through four, but the types of players recruited will change as you learn the new league. Just look at our LB and WR recruits from this year and last year vs. Frost’s first year.
2. Frost needs time to install his culture. I’m with the majority on this one I think in that this shouldn’t take more than two year, and really should just be one. Overall, I think Nebraska has this.
3. Frost needs time to install his system. Another one I think we will probably have disagreement on. Some think this should happen in one spring practice cycle. But I think a system like Frost’s, that wants to get set and go incredibly fast while also reading the defense and making decisions pre- and post-snap is quite a challenge and may take time. The OL has shown a lot of improvement, while skill players haven’t.
4. Finally, Frost needs time to learn how to be a head coach. As I hope you all have done in your respective careers (or schooling for the younger guys on here), you’ve learned how to do your job better over time. Frost is in his fifth year as a head coach and still has plenty to learn. Of his 27 teams between being a player or coach of any kind, he’s only been on a team with a losing record 7 times (worded like this because I think he was traded or dropped on year in the NFL, so two teams, and I didn’t want to break down the record while at each one). This job is probably his hardest yet, but he’s had some incredible coaches h’es learned from through the years, so I hop he’s able to use that to keep learning and improving.

I’ve got more thoughts, especially how seeing growth on the OL and DL is significantly more important to having long-term success than growth at wide receiver, but I want to see what everyone else thinks on this topic!
