Omaha Central lineman Caleb Pyfrom picks Illinois over Nebraska, Minnesota

Bret Bielema’s pitch isn’t fancy. It doesn’t have to be. The Illinois coach builds his teams around offensive linemen, and he tries to give that group extra love when he can.

On his visit to Champaign last weekend, Omaha Central offensive tackle Caleb Pyfrom felt that love. On Thursday, he committed to the Illini, who under offensive line coach and former Omaha resident Bart Miller is making a deeper reach into Nebraska. Pyfrom, the state’s top-rated lineman, is the first to commit from those efforts.

“I liked Coach Bielema and Coach Miller because they both have a history of putting guys in the NFL,” Pyfrom said. “And that’s where I ultimately want to end up in my career. I just felt like that was the best place for me to go. When you’re sitting there talking to Bielema, he feels like linemen are the most important position on the team.”

A 6-foot-5, 300-pound three-star prospect, Pyfrom chose Illinois over Minnesota and Nebraska. Caleb said his mom, Dr. Natasha Pyfrom, liked Illinois’ football program more than UM, where she completed her residency. As for NU, Caleb Pyfrom praised new coach Matt Rhule and his staff.

“I love Nebraska, and I think it’s a really good place,” Pyfrom said. “They have a good campus, they have a good program, and I feel like Matt Rhule is going to have success there, but it wasn’t a fit.”

Why? Pyfrom said NU viewed him as “primarily a guard” while, at Illinois, he’ll be given the chance to play tackle or guard. The Huskers took commits from three interior linemen — Gibson Pyle, Jake Peters and Landen Davidson — over the last several months, with Peters and Davidson committing in the last two weeks. The Huskers continue to recruit Logan-Magnolia (Iowa) tackle Grant Brix and Lyndon (Kansas) tackle Kaedin Massey, who announces his decision Thursday night.
