Offense Leads Women’s Basketball Over Duke

Nebraska(8-1) had stifled six of its first eight opponents to under 55 points to start the season. A hot Duke(6-3) team would mean the offense needed to shine.

Duke shot 61-percent in the first half but trailed 49-45 as Nebraska employed a strategy that Creighton had used to defeat the Huskers: the three point shot. Nebraska was 8-of-19 in the first half, and would go on to make 12 in the game. Duke only shot 4-of-17 from beyond the arc for the game.

Taylor Kissinger four of her six threes in the first half, much to the delight of Kate Cain.

Nebraska head coach Amy Williams signals to a player to take the court during Nebraska’s 83-79 victory against Duke Wednesday night.

“If we have outside shooters like Taylor shooting big outside it means its harder to help in, so it opens everything up,” said Cain. “Its really nice when our shooters are making everything.”

Nebraska’s defense would stymie Duke in the second half to the tune of just 38-percent shooting. Meanwhile, the Huskers stayed consistent around the 50-percent mark with the help of 4-of-8 shooting on threes and two more coming in from Kissinger.

“She’s(Kissinger) been working hard coming to the gym, getting extra shots up,” said coach Amy Williams. “To see that pay off today was really fun.”

The Huskers outlasted the Blue Devils 83-79 to add a win the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Kissinger had a team high 19 points. Cain added 12 and five blocks. Ashtyn Veerbeek(14) and Hannah Whitish(10) also scored in double figures.

The Huskers are now off for 10 days, next hosting Oral Roberts December 14.
