NU Linebacker Alex Davis Sees “The Program” As Opportunity to Push Huskers Outside of Their Comfort Zone, Better Themselves

Last month, the Husker football team arrived at a lake just outside of Lincoln in the pitch black. Paddles and life jackets in hand, the players weren’t quite sure what they had in front of them.

“I knew we were going somewhere with water, but I didn’t have any idea where we were going,” Nebraska senior linebacker Alex Davis said on Sports Nightly on Monday.

The purpose, unbeknownst to the players, was to participate in a training regimen known as “The Program,” which is used by multiple athletic teams to develop leadership in their squads.

A video NU head coach Scott Frost posted to his Twitter account of his players going through “The Program” June 20th went viral, which is currently sitting at over 25,000 likes.

The video depicts the Husker football players going through team exercises, doing push-ups, and rowing inflatable rafts across the lake. Throughout the video, an instructor is heard giving a motivational speech to the players.

“You’re either a guy who cuts corners, or if you’re a leader, you’re a guy that allows it,” the instructor said at one point.

For Davis, a workout like the one “The Program” offers is beneficial, precisely because it pushes players out of their comfort zones.

“I think that ‘The Program’ is really important,” Davis said. “You just get to see your team in a hostile environment… you get to see how your teammates react.”

It’s the second season NU has used “The Program.” Davis said that Frost and the rest of the coaching staff want “The Program” to instill in the players that they need to bring an energy and intensity with them wherever they go, no matter the occasion.

“They want you to attack everything 100% all the time no matter what you’re doing.”

Nebraska’s season is set to start August 31st against South Alabama. Coverage of Husker football can be found on KLIN.
