NU Drops 2-1 Matchup At Northwestern

Evanston, Ill. – The Nebraska soccer team (4-7-2, 0-3-2 Big Ten) dropped a 2-1 decision to Northwestern at Martin Stadium and Ryan Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.

The match, which marked the Huskers’ fifth conference game of the season, featured a few weather delays. Originally scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start, the game was delayed 45 minutes due to lightning in the area, but the first half was able to be played outside at Martin Stadium.

The Huskers attacked first as Abbey Schwarz sent a cross to the center of the pitch to fellow freshman Sarah Weber who gathered and took a shot, but it sailed wide of the goal. Nebraska stayed on the attack, but the Wildcats got on the board first as Josie Aulicino found the back of the net through the Husker defenders and past the diving Sami Hauk in the 15th minute.

Nebraska had a few more opportunities of their own, as it recorded four shots in the first half but was unable to tie the game.

At the break, the teams faced another weather delay that extended the halftime and forced the teams to move inside into the Ryan Fieldhouse. Play resumed and in the 52nd minute Northwestern (7-4-1, 3-1-1 Big Ten) recorded its second goal off a penalty kick resulting from a Husker handball in the penalty box.

Nebraska had a late run as Weber recorded her second goal of the season and her career in the 84th minute. Ashley Zugay sent a corner kick into the goal area and Weber headed the ball into the center of the net.

The Huskers continued to fight and put pressure on the Wildcat defense to send the game into overtime, but they were unable to even the score.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hauk collected six saves in 90 minutes of action. Hauk has recorded nine starts on the season and 41 total saves.

The Huskers continue conference play as they return home for a matchup against Michigan at Hibner Stadium next Sunday. The game is set to kick off at 11:00 a.m. (CT) and will air on BTN.
