NU Comes Up Short in Regular Season Opener

Lincoln, Neb. – Despite holding the 24-11 advantage in shots, the Nebraska soccer team fell to San Diego State, 2-1, in the regular season opener for both teams at Hibner Stadium on Thursday evening.

The Huskers led in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks in the first half, but it was the Aztecs who struck first. Denise Castro controlled the offense for SDSU as she was the only Aztec to score. In the first half, Castro found the back of the net in the 27th minute.

In the second half, the Huskers responded in the 73rd minute with a goal of their own. Sophomore Sarah Weber scored the team’s first goal of the year off the pass from junior Audra Clark. Clark dribbled and sent a shot into the goal area which Weber gathered and shot into the back right corner of the net.

The game was tied until SDSU’s Castro scored the game-winner and her second goal of the game off an assist from Lauren Dicus in the 89th minute.

Despite taking 11 shots and 4 shots on goal in the final 45 minutes, NU was unable to capitalize.

Junior goalkeeper Sami Hauk was one of three Huskers to play the full 90 minutes on Thursday. Hauk, a two-time Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week last season, tallied six saves.

Junior Eleanor Dale and freshman Lauryn Anglim also played the complete game and tallied four shots combined.

The Huskers return to action on Sunday when they stay home to face Oklahoma, starting at 1:05 p.m. (CT).
