Northern Iowa at Nebraska football: Journal Star predictions

Nebraska is looking to improve to 3-0 this season when it welcomes Northern Iowa to town for the Huskers’ first-ever meeting with the FCS program from Cedar Falls, Iowa.

GAME PICKS

Who is the star of the day for the Nebraska offense?

Amie Just, columnist: Dante Dowdell.

Luke Mullin, reporter: Dylan Raiola, who continues a fast start to the year with a four-touchdown day.

Nate Head, sports editor: Calling my shot on a big day for Thomas Fidone. Two touchdowns.

Colton Stone, digital sports editor: Jacory Barney puts his speed on display again. Over 100 yards and two scores.

How do the Huskers fare when defending the run?

People are also reading…

Just: Good, but not perfect. Allow 95 yards rushing.

Mullin: The Huskers get gashed for one big Northern Iowa run but hold the Panthers to less than 150 rushing yards.

Head: Northern Iowa has a big running back who is hard to tackle, but he’ll struggle to find any kind of space in this Blackshirt interior.

Stone: In Matt Rhule’s 14 games, the Blackshirts have allowed less than 100 rushing yards 10 times and 75 or less seven times. There won’t be a lot of open space for UNI.

Which Nebraska player hauls in the most passes?

Mullin: Tight end Thomas Fidone gets involved in a big way, hauling in six catches.

Head: Rahmir Johnson was a popular target last week, but let’s say Raiola takes more downfield shots this time, finding Fidone most often.

Stone: Isaiah Neyor finishes with the most catches, but Banks will have more yards from deep shots.

When does Nebraska empty the bench, or does it even get the chance to do so?

Just: Halfway through the third quarter.

Mullin: It takes a full three quarters, but NU pulls its starters heading into the fourth.

Head: Sometime in the third quarter, allowing for a full fourth quarter for the Huskers’ reserves.

Stone: There’s a real chance that some see the field late in the second quarter. Raiola and co. exit early in the third.
