Nebraska’s Tommi Hill upstages Colorado’s Travis Hunter

Nebraska’s Tommi Hill (left) pressures Colorado’s Travis Hunter on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The headlines tend to follow Colorado’s Travis Hunter wherever he goes.

As a two-way player in the modern era of college football, it’s easy to see why. Hunter made his usual impact on the game, playing both cornerback and wide receiver for Colorado  but he was outshined by a different cornerback when it was all said and done.

Hill directly lined up against Hunter several times, a challenge that he felt brought the best out of him.

“I already knew if he going against me, he’s going to face a dog,” Hill said. “I don’t care what his name was, he just know he was going to get the best out of me.”

Hill’s standout moment came during the first quarter when he came down with an interception and returned it for a touchdown. The senior cornerback said it was his first pick-six since high school, a moment that was a long time coming.

And following that big play, it only kicked off more trash talk between him and Hunter.

“I told him it was going to be a rough game for him,” Hill said of his exchange with Hunter. “He was like, ‘Oh, you trash, Nebraska trash,’ and I was like, ‘Okay, I’m gonna show you.’ I got in his head in the first, second quarter so third quarter he wasn’t talking to me at all.”

This may not be the last Hunter and Hill have seen of each other either. Both are projected to be NFL Draft prospects this spring  and it’s Hill who will come away with the upper hand from their on-field meeting.

“Everyone kept talking about the other team’s corners; Tommi’s a first-rounder,” head coach Matt Rhule said.
