Nebraska’s Thomas Fidone says Husker tight ends are in for big season

The tight end is a young quarterback’s best friend.

One of the statements tight end Thomas Fidone II said during Tuesday’s media availability when talking about incoming quarterbacks Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin.

Fidone is excited about the team and the tight end room heading into the 2024 season. He believes the tight ends will be a major focal point in the offense as reliable players for a young quarterback, and he’s ready to keep improving as a player.

“All of us have a lot of athleticism, and we have a big catch radius,” Fidone said. “As we always like to say, we’re always open no matter what.”

One player he mentioned that adds to the room’s depth is freshman Carter Nelson. His size at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, and athleticism gives him the potential to make an impact and have a big role early.

“I think that’s why he’s going to have a big role this season,” Fidone said. “He’s going to be a heck of a player.”

Fidone returns the most production of any Husker pass-catcher from last season, having racked up 260 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 25 receptions.

After a healthy offseason, he’s gained more confidence as his time with Nebraska continues. He emphasized how he’s getting better at the little things every day.

While he is confident in his receiving ability and route running, he’s worked to get more dominant in the trenches as a blocking tight end.

“I want to continue to get better and better at it,” Fidone said. “In the NFL, there’s honestly a need for people who can be able to do that.”

He models his game after 49ers tight end George Kittle, whom he sees as a great passer and dominant run blocker.

Another focal point this offseason has been reducing turnovers.

Fidone noted that the team is working on drills to reduce turnovers and increase ball security. A big focus is on taking the drills seriously and knowing they’re part of their job.

He feels like the work he’s put in this offseason shows how much work he’s put in this summer, and he’s ready to put that into the season.

“I’m just going to let the play speak for itself this season,” Fidone said. “My goals haven’t changed.”
