Nebraska’s run game is missing one thing

Over Nebraska’s bye week, Matt Rhule took a deep dive into the Huskers’ running game.

The numbers were skewed by the sacks quarterback Dylan Raiola has taken and elevated by Nebraska’s success moving the ball on sweeps outside of the tackles, so Rhule discounted those factors.

He found that NU has been efficient on the ground. Dante Dowdell, Rahmir Johnson and Emmett Johnson have consistently moved the ball forward, chipping away at defense throughout a drive.

The explosive plays Rhule seeks, however, have been missing.

Luke Mullin and Amie Just have the Nebraska football post-practice report on Monday.

Emmett Johnson has the longest rush of the season at 42 yards. Four of Dowdell’s five touchdowns have been from 5 yards out or fewer. Three were plunges from the goal line.

“The big thing for us as we move forward is just to really, really find some ways to get some long runs,” Rhule said. “I like some of the consistency on the runs more than I thought I did, but we gotta hit a couple big ones, and so we haven’t done that.”
