Nebraska’s Matt Rhule details ties to Ohio State staff, friendship with Ryan Day

When Nebraska faces Ohio State on Saturday, it’ll be a reunion of sorts for the programs’ two head coaches.

Nearly two decades ago, Nebraska’s Matt Rhule and Ohio State’s Ryan Day spent a season together on the 2006 Temple football coaching staff. Rhule was the defensive line coach and Day oversaw the wide receivers in a season where Temple went 1-11.

Both young assistants weren’t guaranteed a spot on the staff after head coach Al Golden made numerous changes. While Golden first targeted Day to take over as the team’s quarterbacks coach, he took a position as Boston College’s wide receivers coach, allowing Rhule to fill the position instead.

“They moved me from the D-line to being the quarterbacks coach, so it was a major break in my career,” Rhule said. “… I have a lot of respect for Ryan, we’re good friends.”

While it’s the first time the former colleagues will meet as opposing head coaches, Rhule got a firsthand look at Day’s Ohio State program when he visited the school’s Pro Day in 2021.

His ties to the Buckeye coaching staff don’t end there, either. Current Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye spent a season with Rhule on the 2011 Temple coaching staff, and OSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson was a member of the Penn State staff while Rhule was a player.

“There’s a lot of ties to that team, they’ve done a great job, they’re in the national picture and it’ll be a great opportunity for us to go play against them and me to coach against them,” Rhule said of Ohio State.
