Nebraska volleyball names new assistant coach

Nebraska head volleyball coach John Cook announced a new assistant coach on Friday.

BYU men’s assistant coach Jaylen Reyes was named the new assistant for the Husker volleyball program.

Reyes succeeds Tyler Hildebrand, who accepted a new director position with USA Beach Volleyball in February.

“With Tyler leaving for USA Beach Volleyball, we had to find someone who could step in and replace what he did for Nebraska volleyball, and we had a big challenge,” Cook said. “After interviewing all of our candidates and putting them through an extensive interview process, Jaylen separated himself from the others. Our players and the Husker nation will love his energy, passion and ability to teach the game.”

Reyes will continue the role Hildebrand had, which included coordinating game plans and scouting reports while assistant coaching all positions.

A former BYU libero, Reyes has been an assistant with the Cougars for the past three seasons. BYU has reached the national championship match each of the last two seasons.

This past season, Reyes helped lead the Cougars to a 26-5 record and a share of the regular-season conference title.

Reyes is the son of Tino Reyes, who was the head coach of women’s volleyball at the University of Hawaii at Hilo from 2010-2015.

“I would like to thank Coach Cook for this amazing opportunity to a part of the Nebraska Volleyball family,” Reyes said. “I’m extremely honored and humbled to be able to join the Husker family and help continue the success of the storied program, and to get to work with some amazing young athletes along the way.”

Reyes will officially join Nebraska’s staff when the BYU men’s volleyball season ends. The Cougars play their regular season finale against UCLA on Apr. 7. The postseason tournament takes place May 3-5 in Los Angeles.
