Nebraska soccer loses to Michigan State

The Nebraska soccer team broke one streak but kept another alive in a 4-1 loss to No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday in East Lansing.

Good news first: Sadie Waite’s goal in the 43rd minute broke MSU’s three-match shutout streak. Bad news: the Huskers are now 0-2 in Big Ten play and are on a three-match losing streak.

Waite’s goal tied the match 1-1 after Michigan State’s Meg Hughes scored in the 20th minute. It was Waite’s first match back with the Huskers after playing for U20 Team Canada for the past couple of weeks.

But the Spartans quickly reclaimed the advantage, scoring one minute after Waite on Emily Mathews’ goal. MSU’s other goals came from Jordyn Wickes (69th minute) and Ella Janz (72nd minute).

Michigan State racked up 15 shots; Nebraska had just eight.

The start of the Big Ten season gave the Huskers a big challenge. NU lost 2-0 at No. 17 Iowa last week in its league opener.
