Nebraska soccer finds scoring touch in season-opening exhibition win

Abbey Schwarz scored two early goals to lead the Nebraska soccer team to a 5-1 exhibition win against Kansas City on Monday at Hibner Stadium.

Schwarz opened the scoring in the eighth minute, then added another two minutes later to help the Huskers stake a 2-0 lead.

The teams endured sweltering heat in Lincoln, but the reigning Big Ten regular-season champions drew a strong crowd for a season-opening exhibition.

After Schwarz’s early goals, Sarah Weber scored in the 33rd and Florence Belzile netted another in the 35th. The Huskers took a commanding 4-0 lead into the intermission.

The two teams traded goals in the second half, with Abby Vacek scoring Nebraska’s fifth and final goal of the night.

The Huskers play one more exhibition match — Friday night at Oklahoma — before opening regular-season play against Oklahoma State on Aug. 15 in Lincoln.
