Matt Rhule gave Riley Van Poppel a choice.
The young defensive lineman could play a limited role as a sophomore (eight to 10 snaps per game) or he could take a redshirt. With that redshirt would come an extra season of eligibility, another year to use when Van Poppel is more experienced, stronger and better equipped to make an impact.
Van Poppel took the second option.

The Argyle, Texas, product appeared in Nebraska’s last 11 games as a freshman, logging five tackles and half a sack. This season, he’ll be limited to four games. He’s played in two so far. In practice, he’s on the scout team, preparing the starters for the physicality they’ll face in the trenches throughout the Big Ten season.
“I just think it’s trust, right?” Rhule said. “In an era where I go to a lot of meetings and hear a lot of coaches say like, ‘Ah, these kids are gonna transfer anyway. Play them.’ Just because the system’s changed doesn’t mean a coach should change. We’re here to do what’s right for the players, and so while Riley can certainly help us, we have other guys we think can help us.”
