Nebraska quarterbacks coach diving into his to-do list

Glenn Thomas was coaching in an NFL playoff game in Buffalo on a Monday. Five days later he stood in downtown Lincoln welcoming high school prospects for a Nebraska recruiting weekend.

That professional whiplash left his head spinning early on. Nearly a month later, the Huskers’ new co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach continues to gather initial impressions of the program and people he’s joining.

What is the baseline for where he sees NU’s three scholarship quarterbacks — Heinrich Haarberg and true freshmen Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin — so far? Too soon to say, Thomas said Monday afternoon in his first meeting with local media members.

What is his analysis on the 25 giveaways that Husker quarterbacks were directly charged with last season? He hasn’t gone in depth on it yet.

“That will be, obviously, a topic of discussion moving forward,” Thomas said.

The 46-year-old who spent last season as an offensive assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers is ahead of the learning curve elsewhere. He already has a long-term relationship with co-offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield — they go back 20-plus years — and coach Matt Rhule.

They assembled Monday following a few days off by looking at the foundations of the playbook. A shared history at Temple and Baylor meant they were already speaking with similar terminology. Their previous time together meant Thomas already knew there were no egos to navigate.

“We just kind of hit the ground running,” Thomas said. “It was very smooth and we talk kind of the same language. I think that expedites that process as far as us getting ahead from a schematic standpoint faster.”

Interactions with quarterbacks have been “minimal” so far, Thomas said, beyond a few early introductions. More strategic and structured meetings are coming as the coach learns about the abilities and personalities of his new players. In the meantime he’s observed budding leaders during winter workouts. Vocal. Front of the lines. Extra effort.

Thomas can say the same for the team at large after glimpsing a few player sessions. It’s a first impression he expects to last.

“You could already see that excitement, that energy, that urgency to get better,” Thomas said. “You could see that pretty evident pretty quick. That was probably the biggest thing I’ve taken and am excited to see because that usually doesn’t happen so fast. I think we’re in a great place that way.”

Briefly

NU’s quarterbacks coach will make $800,000 in each of the next two seasons according to a contract released by Nebraska’s athletic department.

Thomas’ contract expires Dec. 31, 2025, lasting through the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

He is the third-highest-paid assistant among head coach Matt Rhule’s 10 full-time coaches.
