nebraska moves brook berringer and tom osborne statue

The popular Brook Berringer/Tom Osborne statue at Memorial Stadium has a new home in front of Nebraska football’s new football building.

The bronze statue, sculpted by Fred Hoppe, had been located in front of the North Stadium entrance since its unveiling in 2006. It features legendary coach Tom Osborne pointing to a field with one hand while the other rests on the shoulder of Berringer, a former Nebraska quarterback who helped NU win the 1994 and 1995 national titles before dying in April 1996 in a small plane crash.

On July 16, NU’s X account revealed that a construction crew had moved the sculpture from its North Stadium spot, where it had become popular for fan photos, to a spot in front of the Osborne Legacy Complex, the $165 million three-level building that houses the Huskers’ new weight room, locker room and cafeteria.

The statue’s home fits snugly next to the sign for the complex, which is located in the East Stadium loop, where Husker football team buses arrive before Saturday home games.

Nebraska football had previously housed the program’s offices, meeting room, locker room and weight room inside North Stadium — known as the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex — but has moved the majority of its operations, this summer, to the Osborne Legacy Complex. The statue went, too, leaving a gap — perhaps for another statue of some other former Husker coach or player — outside the North Stadium entrance.
