Nebraska doesn’t yet have a starting kicker. And Matt Rhule isn’t in any hurry to name one.
Returning starter Tristan Alvano has been limited as he works his way back after a preseason surgery. Special teams coach Ed Foley said Tuesday the sophomore was at 90%. Meanwhile, John Hohl and Nico Ottomanelli have become candidates to open the season as the Huskers’ starter.
Rhule said all have performed well in training camp and a decision will be made late in the week ahead of Nebraska’s opener against UTEP, possibly even on the morning of the game.
“You gotta be 100% at that position to really open up and let it rip at Memorial Stadium with those winds that can sometimes show up,” Rhule said. “So if Tristan’s ready, he’s the best as of next week, then great. And if not, John’s done a great job. So has Nico.”
