After a Nebraska Spring Game in which his quarterbacks completed 67% of their passes and threw for 566 yards, NU coach Matt Rhule is confident he has the right players at the position.
“I think we have our starter sitting in that room,” Rhule said after the White’s 25-21 win over the Red. “Let me say that. I think we have three guys that we believe in.”
Dylan Raiola, Heinrich Haarberg and Danny Kaelin. They each had their moments on Saturday, with Raiola producing the most excitement, completing 16 of 22 passes for 239 yards.
But Rhule did not close the door on adding a transfer QB for depth.
“If a young player comes along or a depth player comes along, we certainly — you know, I don’t go looking in the portal but I’m certainly not stupid,” Rhule said. “If things come across us, we’re always (looking).”
Once Raiola, a five-star signee, joined the 2024 recruiting class, Rhule effectively stopped looking for the kind of transfer QB who could start over every other signal caller in the room. Ohio State’s Kyle McCord — who landed at Syracuse — was on his visit to NU when Raiola dropped Georgia and started more heavily considering NU.
The Huskers have added transfer quarterbacks during most offseasons recently. In 2023, Jeff Sims arrived from Georgia Tech. In 2022, Casey Thompson transferred from Texas and Chubba Purdy arrived from Florida State.
Should NU add one in 2024, it’s likely to be a depth piece.
“We’ll always, always, always look for a quarterback,” Rhule said. “If there’s a quarterback who comes along, we’d always take another quarterback.”
